I Can and I Will — Assertiveness

A manager wanted to stop his employees from using a conference room for their leisure time. There were items stolen from this room, so no one was allowed to enter it without written permission. He noticed that today one of his employees was in the room working on the budget. He reminded this employee that using the room without permission was in violation of the company policy, and he could be written up for it. The employee informed him that he is constantly interrupted and distracted at his desk, which is why he was in the room in the first place. By taking it upon himself to work in the conference room, regardless of the manager’s policy, he acted in an assertive manner.

Assertive personality types will confront a problem head-on and deal with the outcome, whatever it may be. They can be the most effective people in a business because they will analyze a problem from every side. They will tell you what they want to happen, but will ask the necessary questions and listen to all the responses given. They have an understanding for other people’s feelings because they actually take the time to listen to what is being said, and in return, other employees listen to them. They will request something from someone instead of demanding it, but they will actively disagree when they see fit. They have the respect of most of the employees, but passive people will see them as aggressive because they state their feelings, thoughts, and desires. The confidence and mutual respect between them and their coworkers can be shown through these body gestures:

• Maintaining direct eye contact

• Having erect posture

• Displaying the arms in an open position

• Exposing the palms

• Keeping their legs parallel

• Giving nods to show comprehension

• Talking in a moderate pitch
